The Ring Stick Up Cam Battery was built for indoor or outdoor use and joins the company's growing family of smart home surveillance products. As with the original Stick Up Cam we reviewed in 2016, this version is totally wireless, provides motion-triggered video, and works with other connected devices, but you get 1080p video this time around, support for Amazon Alexa voice commands, and wider voice command.
The sleek cylindrical enclosure of the current Stick Up Cam looks nothing at all like its squarish rectangle's previous version. Sold in black or white, it has a weather-resistant IPX5 rating and is 4.9 inches tall and 2.3 inches wide (with the stand). The stand may be used on a desktop or mounted and balanced for the optimal viewing angle on a wall, ceiling, or soffit.
To show the battery-powered lithium-ion battery pack, the camera's base can be twisted off. Depending on use, the battery is rated to last anything between six to twelve months between charging and is removed easily by pushing the silver tab. Take it indoors and use the supplied USB charging cable and charge it for several hours to replenish the battery before the LED goes from red and green.
The new Stick Up Cam provides more beefy specs than the previous, in addition to better aesthetics. Compared with the original camera's 720p resolution and 80-degree field of view, it captures video at 1080p and has a 115-degree field of view. To link directly to your home network, it incorporates 802.11n (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi and does not need a hub like the Arlo Pro 2 and Eufy Cam cameras. Motion detection is video-based and through a built-in microphone and speaker, two-way audio comes through. Up to 30 feet of black-and-white night video is provided by four infrared LEDs.
You can also use the mobile app to supports the Ring's Neighbors app that lets you connect with other users in your neighborhood photos and video of events recorded by your Ring computer. The application opens a dashboard that shows thumbnail images and tabs for Neighbors and History for each installed Ring unit. To view photos and videos of incidents in your neighborhood, such as porch robberies, attempted break-ins, and acts of vandalism, tap the Neighbors tab. You can comment on the event here and view a map of the region where it was held. A History tab is next to the Neighbors tab, which takes you to a screen with a timestamp list of all your motion and alarm incidents. To view, delete, or download a captured video of the event, tap any event.
A timeline feature was added by Ring to the camera view. You can see a sequence of events below the preview screen with timestamps when you press the camera tab. Only scroll through the thumbnails forward and backward and tap any tab to view the video from that timeline, share it with friends, or send it to the garbage. There is a Live button to the right of the timeline bar that starts a live video stream that can be viewed in full-screen mode by turning your phone sideways or clicking the Square Mode button at the lower corner of the video screen.
Push the key to capture the live stream and share it in the Neighbors app, and the Siren button triggers the internal siren of the camera. A microphone button for two-way audio and a button that mutes the speaker is at the bottom of the panel. Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner to change the camera's settings.
The settings screen of the Stickup Cam shows the battery level and has switches for enabling/disabling motion recording and motion warnings. There's also a Live View button that starts a live stream, and there are several buttons below that. To adjust your Wi-Fi network, tap the System Health button, check Wi-Fi signal power, firmware update, and troubleshoot notification issues. To make the Stick Up Cam connect with other Ring devices, press the Connected Devices button. For instance, when the Stick Up Cam senses motion, you can have your Ring Pro doorbell start recording or illuminate the Ring Floodlight. You can have your camera respond to the Ring Alarm sensors as well.
Other configurations allow you to change the frequency of motion alerts, build motion zones and disable motion alerts by setting schedules. You can also use 15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, or two hours of motion warnings to snooze. For motion warning, the App Alerts button provides a dozen different tones and has a volume dial. The Stick Up Cam supports Alexa voice commands that allow you to view the video on compatible Amazon devices, as with other Ring devices, and it works with IFTTT applets that allow it to be incorporated with other IFTTT devices, such as smart door locks, lighting, and sockets.
The Stick Up Cam comes with a free Basic plan that gives you motion warnings and lives on-demand footage, as with any other Ring camera and doorbell, but you have to pay for a subscription to access captured video, while other outdoor cameras like the Arlo Pro 2 give you a few days of free storage before you need a subscription.
Ring's cloud plan, however, is one of the most inexpensive and generous plans around: you get 60 days of cloud storage with a single camera or doorbell for $3 per month or $30 a year. Consider signing up for the $10 a month/$100 per year plan that offers 60 days of storage for all of your devices if you have more than one Ring unit. In contrast, the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor camera has a $5 per month/$50 per year five-day plan, a $10 per month/$100 per year 10-day plan, and a $30 per month/$300 per year 30-day plan.
